I finished the very first pair of socks! It’s Ashland sized. I used “Short-Row Toe and Heel Basic Socks” pattern in Socks from the Toe Up by Wendy D. Johnson as a starting point, but it’s hardly recognizable now because I’ve recalculated the adult size socks into baby size (good to know algebra has practical use! I have yet to find any use for calculus — not that I remember any…), ribbed the top part because Ashland has chubby feet but skinny ankle, and added one row of purl above the toe to make fake seam (…to imitate mass produced socks!, it was just an idea I had and I tried it out).

It’s not perfect, but hey, it’s my first try, and it does fit Ashland pretty well!

We’ve been needing something to put Ashland’s toys in. I resisted the temptation to head out to the Container Store or some such store to buy a plastic bin (which I’ve felt wasn’t all that safe when immi was little anyways) and made this instead. It’s crochet from 3 strands of left over yarns and a super bargain yarn that I had in my stash (…which isn’t very big actually, in fact making this made my yarn supply box a lot less stuffed!). Ashland enjoys rummaging for toys:)

I had a new year resolution: learn to knit. When I took up crocheting a few years back, I chose crocheting over knitting primarily because I thought that managing TWO pointy sticks definitely seemed more difficult than handling one hook. I’ve found that I quite like crocheting, and the look of it too. But sometimes, I like the knitted (as opposed to crocheted) look and feel (stretchier). So I decided to make it a resolution to get over this fear of two sticks :) And look, I figured it out (just the very basics), and made a hat!

It’s for Ashland. This hat is basically just a rectangle stitched up on top. There’s no pattern for this, I just made it up based on his head measurement and loosely inspired by various photos from many books I’ve seen at the bookstore. I had fun doodle stitching on it too, I’ve never embroidered using yarn, but it wasn’t much different from embroidering T-shirt-like fabric, only more fun and a nice way to use up small bits of leftover yarn.

Knitting was fun (though it’s a lot more frustrating to fix knitted problems compared to crocheted problems) once I got over the fact that knitting really is as difficult as it looks — only it’s a kind of difficulty that’s not impossible to get used to.
